(( As you can see I'm none too good at thinking of exciting titles. ))
The bay stallion stood in the grass for a moment, tense as a spring as he once again checked his surroundings for any hint of danger. After a moment he snorted and shook out his short, unkempt black mane and ducked his head to crop at the grass sprouting around his hooves, dark nose snuffling across the ground. His tail swished behind him in a fairly relaxed manner, but his ears were still pricked up and his dark eyes flicked about warily every so often. Archer moved through the grass, following a random path guided by the best looking bits of grass, and eventually came to rest in the shade.

This was a whole new world from what she had learned to expect. Not mystical meadows, no dense forests that gave Marree pain, no valleys, no beautiful wide open fields. Instead, it was a total wreck. The whole place screamed danger, but Marree wasn't even fazed. She didn't blink a pretty eyelash at the wrecked terrain, didn't go out of her way to avoid the harsh sea that lashed out at her. She was instead intruiged by the array of ashes that had been left in one land, and wanted to explore the cliffs that were in her way. Right now, though, the only thing her large eyes saw was that big gaping hole in the middle of the field. Her jaw dropped at the large emptiness of it, and briefly wondered what it would be like to jump in it. Should she? Marree stepped closer fearlessly, then decided it would not be a wise thing to do. The bottom might be pretty far down, and she had a feeling that would kill her. Or something. The fearless mare stepped back from the hole, still eyeing it painfully. Oh, how she'd love to go and jump screaming into it, and see where it took her. The only problem was that she might not live to tell of her spectacular adventures. With a defeated sigh, Marree turned away before she lost control and gave in to her curiousity. She was about to go back to her aimless wanderings, just sort of floating all about this new place. That was when she saw him.
Her whole face lit up with happiness, and she literally bounced as she came closer to him. "Archer! Archer, it's me, Marree, remember? I met you a few days ago? How'd you get here? I'm not sure how I got here, but I'm glad to see you! This place looks cool, doesn't it? Sort of dangerous, but fun! Do you want to go down the hole, because I really don't want to die." Her words were jumbled yet understandable as she bounded over to him. Marree stood before him with an expectant and happy look on her face, sort of like a dog who knows he's done good and is waiting to be rewarded. Though what anyone would ever reward Marree for is beyond me; she often makes trouble instead of making good.

(( That's your writer's block? I feel so intimidated )) Archer snatched another mouthful of grass and was reviewing the shattered landscape with a bored expression when he noticed the shape in the distance. As it came closer, it slowly resolved itself into the shape of a mare- and one that seemed familiar, too. The bay pricked his ears up and stared at her with a frown, dredging his memory. As she turned to look at him and bounded across, it clicked, and he recognized the excitable mare from the other day. "Marree," he whinnied cheerfully, trotting over to meet her. "How could I forget?" He flicked his tail around his legs and stretched his neck out to touch her shoulder affectionately. "I just kind of wandered about," the stallion explained with a shrug. "It's a bit weird, this place. And I don't think going down the hole would be a recommended idea. The occasional puff of steam worries me particularly." Archer leaned back and regarded her amiably, noting the eager expression. He tried to pin down exactly what it was that attracted him to this mare, and failed. Admittedly she was rather strange, but after most of the mares he met, he found her naivety rather enjoyable. And at least there wasn't much risk of her running off with some overbearing stallion who was better then him just because he had his own herd and was about a head taller, forcing him to do a little cliff-pushing. Now he thought about it, that hole might be perfect to push people into. He entertained this idea for a moment before glancing back at Marree. (( I wonder why I'm so obsessed with Archer pushing people off cliffs. ))

Her large, attentive eyes gave the appearance that the words Archer was saying weren't simply going in one ear and out the other, or bouncing off her pretty head as they seemed to be doing. She blinked a few times, trying to concentrate her energy on what the stallion in front of her was saying. Her rather long tail brushed at the ground half-heartedly, she wasn't really paying attention to that part of her body. Besides, the flies were not bad at all here. They seemed to be driven away by the seemingly hazardous weather. A tremor of happiness shuddered through her body as Archer's soft nose found her shoulder. Marree extended her neck a little bit and gave a happy nibble to the end of his mane, returning his affection. The large mare was quite happy, actually. Do you know how rare it is for her to see a horse she knows? Most turn and run the other way, frightened by her blunt and fearless tactics. But here was Archer, smiling and talking and acting like her friend.
He couldn't forget her. Marree was beaming at him, processing the rest of his words. "Wandering? I like to wander! Isn't it so exciting? Never knowing where you'll end up? I love it!" It was always exclamations with this one. If you wanted to have a quiet, soulful conversation, don't catch her eye. She'll follow you like a lost puppy. But then again, Marree has one of the shortest attention spans you've ever seen. It would not be too hard to ditch her, just point out a pretty butterfly over yonder, and she'll be out of your hair for a few minutes, more if you disappear from her sight. You know what they say--out of sight, out of mind. Not that she has the greatest mind in the first place. "Weird? Is that the word you'd use to describe this..." She mused; ending what should be a question in a wonderment to herself. "I guess you might say that; but I'd say it is spectacular. Have you ever seen such scenery? Ever witnessed such a wide, gaping hole? Look at this whole place! It looks as if someone was quite angry with it. Don't you think?" She wasn't even debating the issue, just exclaiming her bizarre thoughts, as usual. "The steam is quite and interesting feature... but I won't push you to go down it. You are my friend, I like you, and if you died I might have to be sad." A frown played over her face for a moment as she considered how she'd feel if she knew Archer was no longer alive, on the face of this messed-up earth. She would be upset. Her happiness was restored, though, as she remembered why she had come over to him in the first place. "Just wanted to say--greetings from Marree World!"
Yes, what you're thinking is correct. This mare has some serious issues. But at least she's happy.

Archer watched her quietly, brown eyes bright behind a lock of tangled mane, and leaned into a more relaxed poise, ears swiveled to point at Marree. A soft laugh passed his throat as she spoke; happiness is, after all, infectious, and this mare had a lot of happy. "Indeed it is," he murmured in reference to wandering. "It's a sort of freedom, I think, just going wherever you want." As she continued to speak, the stallion let his eyes leave her for a moment, and glance across the scenery again, musingly. "I suppose it is... impressive, in it's own way," he replied, gaze returning to her. He gave a soft snort of amusement and added; "You have a very optimistic viewpoint, Marree." The bay whirled his own matted tail, more from habit than irritation, and kept a peaceful watch on the mare. "I'm glad you like me," he said, smiling. He gave her frown an anxious look, and hoped he hadn't upset her. She was, after all, his Friend. Archer paused to consider this for a moment. He didn't really have many friends. For some reason, he never seemed to get on with stallions, and friendship didn't tend to be what he looked for in a mare. The stallion wondered briefly what you were actually meant to do with a friend. This line of contemplation was interrupted by Marree returning to her usual state of irrepressible joy, and he peered at her cheerfully. "Marree world?" Archer repeated, smiling. "Sounds nice." He snorted, and dropped his head a moment to retrieve another mouthful of grass, having completed the previous bite.

Another puff of steam stole Marree's attention breifly, but returned it within seconds. Her eyes roamed over the whole place, looking for another horse coming, or something like that, but always ended up looking back into Archer's eyes. Back down; I should say. What a freak of nature, standing nearly seventeen hands tall. And a light horse, slim and slender and long-legged. She didn't have a hint of stockiness in her curvy figure. Though always alight with excitement, her eyes also held a kindness in them that she was unaware of. A sort of gentleness--Marree had gotten into very few fights in her days, and she really would be opposed to one. Maree only fought because she was forced, and, at the time, it seemed an intruiging idea to her. It had sickened her after only a few minutes and she'd fled the little 'arena' the older horses had set up for her and a few other foals, when she was of that age. No one could stop her; she had been nearly royalty, after all. Besides, her legs were so long and powerful even at that age that it would be a challenge to catch up to her.
Her muzzle found the long back of the stallion, and she rested it there unknowingly, having a flashback. Her eyes went unfocused, and she could only stare out over the empty space as a reminder of her childhood days shook her. The foal didn't look disporportionate, even though she wasn't even a year old yet. Well, not compared to what her matured self would be. She would forever have too-long legs, with a too-long neck and too-long back. That was basically what she was right now; only on a smaller scale. Her head did look slightly too big for her body, but she'd grow into it quickly. With a rare frown she pushed past the mature horse. He was just an observer--he wouldn't stop her. So Marree picked up and easy run, hearing the sound of hoofbeats behind her. Not too far behind, but not too close. Just keeping track of her. Her brow furrowed and she sped up, still tasting the salty red substance in her mouth. She could still see the colt lashing out at her, missing his mark by mere inches. Not that his hoof would do too much damage; it was tiny. But that could give her all the more reason to dislike the devil's son. Still; it hadn't felt good to sink her teeth into his withers and hear his cry of pain. It made her feel... bad. Those stupid horses; always forcing her to do things she didn't want to do. The sound of pursuit came closer, and Marree snorted. She hated them; they made her unhappy. They made her hate them. She liked to like others and smile and laugh, she didn't like to fight. What a stupid idea; fighting for foals. As she passed a puddle she slowed to dip her mouth into the water, trying to wash out the disgusting taste. It didn't work completely; but now mud on her tongue gave her something else to think about. A grey mare was grazing just a hundred feet away, and Marree put on a burst of speed to make it to her Nana, then hid behind the old mare. Nana looked at Marree and gave her an affectionate nuzzle before turning and nodding at the equine's who'd been following Marree. The filly could hear them turning and leaving, and she sighed into Nana. Nana made everything better . . . Marree had been leaning into Archer more than she realized, and instantly jerked her head off his back; not wanting to knock him over. She blinked rapidly for a moment, wondering how long she'd been out. "Sorry, flashback." Her voice was too stunned to portray her usual enthusiasm, but with a shake of her head she brought her smile back to her muzzle. "Does that ever happen to you? I sort of zoned out... very sorry, very sorry... didn't mean to... what were we talking about again?"
But then she recalled the whole conversation, and picked off where they left off without missing a beat. "Optimistic; they say that alot. I don't mind, though. It's true. If everyone else was optimistic it might get boring... I'd have no one to cheer up!" Her eyes widened slightly in not-entirely-mock horrror. Marree pointed both her ears at Archer, though he was done talking now. His words could still make her smile, even though her face was already stretched with a wide grin. "I'm glad you're glad I like you... you know, you are one of my only friends. Or my only friend... Maybe... I'm not sure. I tend to scare my other friends off..." She sighed softly, but wouldn't be saddened by this. She had Archer for her friend; and that was all she needed. Sure, she'd take more, but one was enough for now. "Marree world is quite enjoyable; maybe you should take a trip there sometime!" Bouncing again, she lifted her head higher to sweep the place for more horses. Finding none, again, she let her gaze fall back to Archer, her happiness vibe flowing off of her.

Archer shifted his hooves slightly, dark eyes watching her serenely as her gaze flickered about. He blinked slightly as she rested her head against his back, and the bay stallion twisted his neck about to give her a curious look as she zoned out. She was quite a bit taller than him, and rather heavy too, causing his hooves to scrabble for grip in the grass. He hoped he wasn't going to fall over, that would be very embarrassing. A look of relief passed his face as she jumped back to life, quite literally, and her recovered his balance and gave her a distracted smile. "Flashbacks?" Archer repeated, swiveling his ears round to listen to her explanation. "No, that's never happened to me... I suppose I don't really have anything to remember. My life has been exceedingly dull thus far." The stallion turned slightly and bumped his muzzle against her cheek with a grin. "That's quite alright, anyway," he finished. Archer half closed his eyes and relaxed his body again, leaning back into his hind legs and propping up one foot. "If everybody was as optimistic as you, Marree, the world would be a wonderful place, I'm sure," he murmured, smiling softly. "I'm glad you're glad I'm glad- actually, I don't want to start that." He laughed, and continued; "You're my only friend too. Aren't we lucky to have each other." His tail flicked again, and he shook his head slightly as she continued. "I can't imagine why. You're such a nice person," he said in all sincerity. He smiled as she cheered up again and pranced his front legs a little- being infected by her euphoria. "I'd love to," he said with a small laugh. "Archer land is a rather dull place- Marree world sounds much more fun."
