Earth, fire, wind and water – this is how Dreaver began. The ground smiled and from its cavernous mouth mountains stepped. The wild woods kindled and ran on heels of flame. The north whistled so long and loud that the land rose up to its gusting arms and was thrown back in parts and pieces. The ocean hummed and all was covered in white-edged sighs.
Then the earth closed, the fire died; the wind abated and the water rolled back to the shore. Under the blushing sun stood a raw world, bright and glistening and new. From the peaks of the slate hills, through the dense rows of forest and steep juts of ravine; round the smooth glass of lake and deep tangles of thicket; down to the high headland and rushing sea; the land of Dreaver was born. And every part of it was tingling with apprehension of life.
Life. Like an infestation of maggots life squirmed and writhed into every corner of Dreaver, convulsing in the foul squalor of existence. Life feasted off the land as if it were a rotting carcass, burrowing deeper and deeper until Dreaver was a groaning, ravaged hulk, stripped of its beauty and resources by the hordes of parasites that knew no better. Even when the last tear of life had been leeched from the place, the squabbling equines knew no better; the Lights fought the Darks and the Darks fought the Lights, and the Neutrals drifted in between, taking whichever side was most profitable.
Earth, fire, wind and water - this is how Dreaver ended. The ground smiled and mountains tumbled into its greedy sneer. The wild woods kindled and burned where they stood, and the air was full of their shrieking. The north howled tunelessly, and when the land rose up to meet it there were no embracing arms - only sharp tongues and buffeting fists. The ocean hummed and all was smothered with white-bladed fingers.
Then the earth closed, the fire died; the wind abated and the water rolled back to the shore. Under the blushing sun was a world scarred and pockmarked, lifeless and battered from its brutal cleansing. The vicious circle seems set to turn.
But will it?
